Democratic Values = REAL Values

By Pat Thompson

Following the loss of the 2004 Presidential Election, many people within the Democratic Party, and plenty of talking heads , have asked the questions:  What was done wrong?  How can we regain the morality voters? Is the Democratic Party still viable?  Yadda, yadda, yadda…

If one weren’t paying attention, one would think that John Kerry had lost by a gigantic majority.  The senator received 57 million votes -- and quite likely many more if all votes were counted and all voters allowed to vote. Bush's 1% margin is hardly a landslide, and his political capital is actually meager. 49% of the people voted to throw him out!   The exit polls showed that a much higher percentage had voted for Kerry.

Thinking of ways that the Democratic Party can appeal to the voters of the South is a very foolish idea. The “Democratic” South was lost when the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964.   Many in the South were still very happily lynching black men in the 1930's. These lynchings were witnessed by many voters with "Values", Christians who watched with their families while having a picnic.

During the period preceding the Civil War, Abolitionists in the North, especially in places like Massachusetts (you know, Massachusetts Liberals) condemned the practice of slavery which was widespread across the south. “Christian Values”to these people included slavery and segregation

The Democratic Party which has supported civil rights, social security, Medicare, unions, women's rights, gay rights, does not need to change it's values. We need to consistently point out that the neo-cons who have taken over the Republican Party have NO values, and have used the Christian Right to their own, greedy ends. Changing our party to be acceptable to the bigots in the South who voted for Bush would be a  big mistake. The demographics of this election show that the Rocky Mountain West is where Democratic support is growing.

My advice to the Democratic party is: Forget the South. Go West.....  And the issue will be  THE ENVIRONMENT. Hunters, fishermen, skiers, hikers, outdoorsmen are turning against the party that has auctioned off  clean air, water and public lands to the highest bidder.

Stupid Quote of the Day

"I don't know what the facts are but somebody's certainly going to sit down with him and find out what he knows that they may not know, and make sure he knows what they know that he may not know, and that's a good thing. I think it's a very constructive exchange."

- Donald Rumsfeld, today, on the soldier (Spc. Jerry Wilson) who complained about inadequate equipment in Iraq

I wish that I knew what I knew before the Secretary told us what he didn't know that Spc. Wilson knew that he might've known had he been told by someone who did know.
