William Donohue

“William Donohue Sells both his Soul and the Catholic League to the Right”

“Some opponents of ‘Justice Sunday’ have said that Dr. Al Mohler has branded the Catholic religion ‘a false religion.’ He’s obviously wrong, but then again he’s a Southern Baptist and that’s what they believe. As long as we’re not called a satanic cult—ala Bob Jones University—I’m prepared to join hands in the culture war.” - William Donohue, April 22nd , 2005.

In attendance for Justice Sunday this past week was none other than William Donohue, President of the Catholic League. It was noted that Mr. Donohue was the lone Catholic at the event. In the battle to confirm far-right judicial nominees, Donohue has become a key asset for the Christian right's evangelical faction. He has argued that Democratic senators opposing these nominees are motivated by /anti-Catholicism/, even if the Senators he has singled out are indeed Catholic themselves.

In a statement on the Catholic League’s web site, it states “/Founded in 1973 by the late Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J., the Catholic League defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination.”

Apparently, the Catholic League is no longer in the business of defending the rights of Catholics to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination. These days the Catholic League is a front for the extreme right wing agenda of its President, William Donohue. Despite his concern with anti-Catholicism, Donohue had no qualms about sharing the stage with the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary president Dr. Albert Mohler.

"As an evangelical, I believe that the Roman Catholic Church is a false church,"/** Mohler remarked during a 2000 TV interview/. "It teaches a false gospel. And the Pope himself holds a false and unbiblical office."/ Donohue has relentlessly attacked politicians on the left. Many are Catholic who participate daily in American public life. These good Catholic politicians have never made any /anti Catholic/ remarks. Donohue however was silent about Mohler. In fact, Justice Sunday took place at Mohler’s home church in Louisville, Kentucky, Highview Baptist Church.

“I believe that there may very well be some members of Catholic churches who know the Lord Jesus Christ as savior, but the Catholic Church itself -- evangelicals have believed ever since the Reformation -- it's teaching and represents and holds forth a false gospel. A gospel of works rather than grace.” – Dr. Al Mohler, March 22^nd 2000 – Larry King Live

Even harder to believe, as a Catholic himself, in statement after statement, Donohue continues to misrepresent to the public and media the Catholic Faith.

“Well, I believe pacifism is inherently immoral.” – William Donohue October 21st of 2004 - MSNBC’s Hardball/*

Most sane Catholics would agree that members of the Catholic Clergy, including Pope Benedict XVI are either pacifists or subscribe to certain pacifist teachings. As Catholics for Faithful Citizenship, we wonder if Donohue may soon travel to Rome with his new /anti Catholic/ partner Dr. Mohler to discover if Pope Benedict XVI is immoral as Donohue suggests and if he has a relationship with Jesus Christ or not as Mohler suggests.

It is apparent that Donohue has shed any Catholic Character he had left with his latest action. Instead of following his organization’s statements about how they defend against Catholic Bashing at all levels of society, Donohue seems more than willing to allow Mohler to bash the Catholic Faith in order to advance his own personal political agenda.

It is time that the Catholic League clean house and rid itself of board members like Alan Keyes who appeared recently at the /anti Catholic/ World Harvest Church in Columbus, Ohio. It is time that the Catholic league lives up to its charter of defending Catholics, lay and clergy alike to participate in American public life without threat of defamation or discrimination. It is time the Catholic League seeks the resignation of William Donohue and replaces this man who has betrayed his fellow Catholics and the teachings of his faith in favor of a twisted right wing agenda.

It should be noted that in 2000 Donohue also gave a pass to then Governor Bush when he addressed the notoriously anti Catholic Bob Jones University. We wonder if he would have given the same pass to a candidate from the left, even if the candidate was Catholic.

The "Axis of Evil", North Korea

North Korea fires a missile that landed between their part of the Korean peninsula and Japan. This flies in the face of any and all peace talks that President Bush spoke about during his press conference last week. Why is this significant? Simple... because the US has spread its troops so thin, the charter member of the "Axis of Evil" feels they ca get away with anything.

Maybe they're right.

Just think about this: Do you think that Kim Jung-Il would have tried a stunt like this had the US not been involved all over the world? If he had, what would have been the US response? What would Ronald Reagan have done if Il, or his father had done such a thing in the 80's? Maybe that's not a good comparison.

"We're not surprised by this. The North Koreans have tested their missiles before. I think they're looking to kind of be bullies in the world."
-Andrew Card, President Bush's Chief of Staff and all around shill for the White House

Some of you early Saturday Night Live fans will remember skits with Martin Short as an executive trapped by Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes saying, "I knew that. What surprises me is that you didn't know that I knew that."

Andrew Card, where's your "Bag of Glass?" (I know. They're obscure references, but sometimes I do this stuff for me, too.)

Bolton the Basher

"John (Bolton) strongly believed that just because the intelligence community had a conclusion on an issue, that didn't necessarily have to be his view... in other words, John felt he had every right to interpret what the evidence meant and come to a different conclusion than the intelligence community."
-Alan Foley, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency's weapons proliferation center, in a transcript interview

Do we really want a UN Ambassador that cherry-picks information to suit his own needs? Why not? We have a president that operates the very same way.

More on DeLay

"DeLay has long been one of Congress' most vocal critics of what he calls Castro's 'thugocracy,' which is why some sharp-eyed TIME readers were surprised last week to see a photo of the Majority Leader smoking one of Cuba's best - a Hoyo de Monterrey double corona, which generally costs about $25 when purchased overseas and is not available in this country. The cigar's label clearly states that it was made in 'Habana.' "

What a hypocrite and crook!

A REAL Town Hall Meeting

Watching a town hall meeting with Michael Howard of the British conservative party, I was struck by the difference with similar American events. The audience was allowed to ask any question they wanted. But amazingly they actually engaged in a dialog - follow up questions were allowed! The moderator would jump in and clarify the discussion when necessary. At no point was the audience ever rude to Mr. Howard.

How would George Bush have reacted to such a format? After all, this President hand picks audiences for these social security forums and routinely ejects people that may disagree with him. Why are our elected officials so afraid of the people? They patronize us while giving lip service to Democracy. Sure, they want our vote but not our input on their job performance. Bush has remarked that he doesn't govern by polls. Fair enough but does he care at all that his policies are angering people? How can America claim to be a force for Democracy in the world while it's disappearing at home? How can the majority vote to restrict debate by the minority while claiming to love our system?

Stupid Quotes

"The special interests will run TV ads calling me cruel and heartless... They will try to say I don't understand the consequences of these decisions."
-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in regard to his attempt to raid the pension fund of 1.4 million California workers

Do you hear that noise? It's the sound of the Governator's approval rating dropping. Schwarzenegger has since retracted the comments. It appears that the man who defeated the Predator is in fear for his political life. Too bad he just can't help himself. Last week, Arnold told the world that vigilantes patrolling the Mexican-American border was a good idea, and that he would welcome them in California.

"our government cannot secure the borders and keep our country protected."
- Herr Governator

Hey AHN-OLD, how did you get here? Do you really think that shooting people wanting a better life is a good idea? Why not electrify fences? Why not put a barbed-wire no-man's-zone along the 800-mile or so border? Maybe we can even put man-eating animals in the zone. We wouldn't even have to feed them!

"They're lying to the people, and they're trying to convince the people that my reforms are no good because they feel that that will be destructive to them because they want to keep the power, and they want to keep spending money."

Reforms can be good Mr. Schwarzenegger, but not when they come at the expense of the people that believed in you and put you into office. Stop trying to steal their money. Remember, they can take you out of office as well.
