Today's Note From a Madman

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Two days ago, I sent an email to This is the website set up by the spiritual leader of Iraq, Ayatollah Ali al Sistani and his followers. They want questions relating to the Koran, so I figured I’d ask a big one. I asked:

What should be done in the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel?

I haven’t received a response yet, but I did get this:

What Schmucks Say

"We need teenagers to get pregnant because they produce dumb kids who can't get good jobs, so they go into the armed forces. We need people in the armed forces because we got a lot of people we have to shoot."
-A Right-winger who didn't think I'd actually publish this

Yes, this was said in jest, but it's insensitive and stupid, nonetheless.

"To get federal funds, for example, abstinence-only programs are typically barred by law from discussing condoms or other forms of contraception - except to describe how they can fail. So kids in these programs go all through high school without learning anything but abstinence, even though more than 60 percent of American teenagers have sex before age 18."

"In 1988, a survey by the Alan Guttmacher Institute found that only 2 percent of sex-ed teachers used an abstinence-only approach. Now, the institute says, a quarter of them do."

"Other developed countries focus much more on contraception. The upshot is that while teenagers in the U.S. have about as much sexual activity as teenagers in Canada or Europe, Americans girls are four times as likely as German girls to become pregnant, almost five times as likely as French girls to have a baby, and more than seven times as likely as Dutch girls to have an abortion. Young Americans are five times as likely to have H.I.V. as young Germans, and teenagers' gonorrhea rate is 70 times higher in the U.S. than in the Netherlands or France."

"Perhaps the most careful study of the issue involved 12,000 young people. It found that those taking virginity pledges had sex 18 months later, on average, than those who had not taken the pledge. But even 88 percent of the pledgers had sex before marriage."

"troubling, the pledgers were much less likely to use contraception when they did have sex - only 40 percent of the males used condoms, compared with 59 percent of those who did not take the pledge." -NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF, The New York Times, February 16, 2005

So I asked this Right-winger, "Why has teenage pregnancy risen during the 4 plus years of the GW Bush Administration?"

The answer I received was disturbing. He said "Coincidence"

How about a real answer instead? Since condoms are described by abstinence only programs as a "failure", teenagers figure that, since they're going to get pregnant anyway, why use them?

By not stating the truth about condoms (almost completely effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Diseases), those who ignore a complete sexual education program are condemning those who will continue to have unprotected sex, and they are many.

In response to Rush Limbaugh calling himself, "America's commentator, SueJohnToots writes, "I thought he said 'commandant.'"

In response to My Brother, Bruno Corey writes:

Though my brother did not vote for Bush in 2004, he used to be a Republican (the opposite of your brother). He now thinks Bush is a bumbling idiot, thank God. A lot of people went along with Bush's lies that had previously voted Democrat. While I was canvassing my neighborhood for Dem votes I came upon a particular household that was supposedly solid Democratic. The husband answered the door and said his wife would vote Democratic, but that he was voting for Bush. I asked why and he answered "security and Israel". He did not want to hear my arguments against Bush. This was proof that the smear and fear campaign of Karl Rove was working.

Recently some of these cross over people are have second thoughts about the greatness of Bush. Have you seen the letter being passed around through email expressing great dismay over Bush's Social Security privatization plan? It's in bold letters and is directed to "Republican of Democrat". I think it's the same cross over people that voted for Bush this time that are realizing that he will do them great harm if his agenda gets pushed through.

A TRUE Independent

I know THIS GUY who assured me that he was a “true independent” He then kept emailing me all this right-wing lies that he got off of FOX NEWS and the GOP website. He’s the worst type of Rightie - he's a closet Rightie.

We got into this argument about Labor Unions. He said they were "ruining America" He said other things like, "Union members got away with murder," and "Unions were putting American businesses out of business."

I want you to know something else about THIS GUY. He is the same guy who doesn’t stop complaining about how he is being mistreated by his boss. He's the same GUY who who can’t stop yelling about the lack of overtime pay and how much he has to pay for his health insurance plan and his co-pays.

So I asked him, if a Labor Union came into his office (he works in a new technology that is just beginning to unionize) and asked him to join, would he?

His reply?

Stupid Quote of the Day

"The only thing I'm not open-minded about is raising the payroll tax rate. And all other issues are on the table,"
- "G"lobal "W"arming Bush, in an interview published in the New Haven Register

That's THE ONLY THING that GW isn't open-minded about? I find THAT hard to believe.
