... and the winner of this year's Zell Miller
award goes to...
(One-hand clapping applause)
You all remember Zell Miller, the former Democrat Governor and US Senator from Georgia who turned GOP red for President Bush during the 2004 election. You might also remember Miller as the most recent former US elected official to formerly challenge anyone to a dual, as he did to Chris Matthews on MSNBC's Hardball.
Lieberman, the Demcorat-turned-Independent-but-might-as-well-be-a-Republican-already will get a featured role at the GOP convention next month in Minnesota.
Maybe Joe-Mentum will get spot after Idaho's Senator Larry Craig. Beware of the wide stance, Joe.
No doubt that Lieberman will be a prominent figure at the GOP convention. He'll be held out as an example to other Democrats who won't vote for Obama and paraded around like a dog on a leash by the Party he used to run against.
Lieberman, still Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee in the Senate, is a staunch supporter of the Bush war in Iraq. He, like the few who still support "Stay the Course", have no answers other than McCain's hundred year plan for occupation in Iraq.
The GOP convention is the right place for Joe Lieberman.
I supported the decision in 2000 which Al Gore made when he chose Lieberman as his running mate. After the loss to the Bushies in 2000, I had even described myself as a Lieberman Democrat, something I admit reluctantly today.
Certainly Lieberman is still with the Democrats on many, if not all other issues the GOP considers near and dear to them. For example, he is pro-choice, a position which would be impossible to alter as a Connecticut Senator and votes as most other Democrats vote when crunch-time comes. The American Conservative Union gave Lieberman a very Liberal ranking of eight for his 2007 US Senate votes. The only two votes Joe-Mentum voted with the GOP and which the ACU approved of were his vote against the minimum wage increase and, of course, for more Iraq war.
Lieberman is much like those on the Right we call one-issue voters. When many of us look at the Religious Right, we see a group obsessed with the single issue of abortion rights which exclude all other issues from their radar screen. Lieberman in his support of his friend John McCain is no different.
Does Joe-Mentum think that the economy will be saved by a McCain presidency? Does he think that pro-life justices McCain will appoint to the Supreme and federal courts will be for the rights women have fought so hard to obtain over these past two-plus centuries?
No, Senator Lieberman is just like those on the Right who care only about one issue, whether that issue be women's rights or personal wealth.
Joe Lieberman is a Republican - a one-issue GOP flag waver. He just doesn't know it yet.
In response to, "And let's face it, that's exactly what the President is: a spoiled brat born with a silver spoon in his mouth," Robert Scardapane writes:
A spoiled brat indeed! The silver spoon occupies lower regions of the anatomy. The sad part is that this spoiled brat gets what he wants from Congress. I am baffled by the Democratic party's 2008 strategy. Nancy, Harry - what are you doing?
In response to, "When are Americans going to say that they had enough with the Republican scams!" Pat Thompson writes:
The American people were stupid enough to elect George W. Bush TWICE. I have absolutely no confidence in the actions of Americans -- at least half of them. And no reason to believe they got any smarter over four years, and the voting machines didn't get any better either. When Obama said he would raise taxes on people making over $250,000, and would institute a windfall profit tax on big OIL, to give ordinary people a refund -- that was the end -- they will go into high gear to defeat him any way possible. Just watch.
