Today's Quote in the Lead

"The guy (President "G"lobal "W"arming Bush) saw me in almost a dozen settings, and joked with me about a bunch of things, including details of my kids. Perhaps he has forgotten everything, who knows,"
-Jack Abramoff, to Kim Eisler, national editor for the Washingtonian magazine

Abramoff the Bush "Pioneer" also says that he was asked to come to the ranch by the President. There are at least five pictures of Bush and Abramoff together (I'm sure GW must called him "Jackie-Boy" or something like that).

Just the same way that "Kenny-Boy" Lay, the former CEO of Enron who is now facing a jury for the Great Enron Rip-Off , went from being one of "Georgie-Boy's Good Buddies" to become a mere acquaintance, Abramoff is now "Jack who?" to just about any Republican, including GW.

"They (Abramoff's statements) reflect the feeling of frustration he has not just with Bush but with all these guys claiming they didn't know him,"

I feel nothing more than loathing for Jack Abramoff, but he is merely a symptom of the problem with Lobbyists all over the nation, albeit a huge symptom. The real issue is the politicians that are easily, readily and criminally influenced by those Lobbyists. George W. Bush, at least in this respect, is just the same as Tom DeLay, Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) and the new House Majority leader, Rep. John A. Boehner (R-OH) (See Below). He just has more people and more means to deflect criticism and use their WMD's (Weapons of Mass Distraction).

Can anyone say "Nerve Gas Scare"?

So there is a time when the Bush administration will release classified information, and that time is simply when it suits their needs. Just like when Karl "The Traitor" Rove and "Scooter" Libby (no other nicknames necessary - Scooter is enough) released the name of Valerie Plame as an undercover CIA operative as revenge aimed at Joe Wilson (her husband) for actually speaking the "truth", the President and a bevy of Bushies de-classified information to prove the necessity of the "Spying on Americans Program".

How convenient this bully pulpit is.

"Their plot was derailed in early 2002, when a Southeast Asian nation arrested a key Al Qaeda operative. Subsequent debriefings and other intelligence operations made clear the intended target and how Al Qaeda hoped to execute it."
"This critical intelligence helped other allies capture the ringleaders and other known operatives who had been recruited for this plot,"
-George W. Bush, after de-classifying an incident where "evesdropping" on an al-Qaeda phone call allegedly stopped a plot to fly an aircraft into the U.S. Bank Tower, formerly known as the Library Tower

Boy... GW must have really liked the movie Independence Day. That's the initial building they blew up (the one that Vivica A. Fox' "exotic dancer" friend was standing on top of, for those of you who need a reminder). If you're going to make up a plot, you had better make it memorable.

But I say let's give GW and the boys from DC the benefit of the doubt here. This was a phone call made by and to al-Qaeda operatives. These were also calls made to terrorists outside of the US by non-US citizens. GW... you did the right thing here. You are supposed to spy on the enemy. You're not supposed to spy on us who are protected here in the United States by that "quaint" piece of paper known as the US Constitution!

Let's put the most pro-Bush face on it as possible I imagine it went something like this:

NSA Operative: (Listening in on phone calls) We got something here boss.
NSA Supervisor: Let's report it to Condi (Condoleezza Rice, then National Security Advisor)
CONDI: (On the other end of the phone) We had better stop this plot right now!

Wow... It worked!

Bush likes to invoke the names of Osama bin-Laden and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed when reporting things like halted terrorist attacks. It makes him appear to actually care as to what bin-Laden and al-Qaeda are up to, although he stated the opposite:

"I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him,"
-Bush regarding Osama bin-Laden

However, when it suits him, GW will bring forth the name of the tallest man in the middle east who is carrying a kidney machine.

So what does this all have to do with spying on Americans you might ask? NOTHING. These were foreign nationals in other countries who were arrested in those other countries planning on killing Americans here. Hey GW... we want you to spy on the bad guys. We all think that's a good idea.

However, spying on American citizens when they are talking to American citizens inside our borders is going to require a court order, as you said yourself. If I remember correctly, you said "It requires a court order."

We don't want our telephone service providers giving you our phone logs and allowing you to tap our phones unless you have a reasonable suspicion for it. Even then, you get three whole days to do it before going to the ultra-friendly, GOP placed FISA courts to make it "legal". We don't want you snooping at the books us American citizens read or the movies we watch or the places we eat dinner. It is none of your business.

Get a warrant of you want to spy on us. We don't trust government, we don't trust you and we won't trust the next man or woman in the White House either, be they Republican or Democrat.

So now, to go along with the new House Majority leader's other, shall we say, "questionable choices" which include, but are not limited to: (A) Passing out checks to other Republicans on the floor of the House of Representatives from a Big Tobacco Lobbyist as they were about to vote on a Big tobacco bill; and (B) Accepting almost $160,000 from Jack Abramoff or those he represented and not returning a dime or contribute any of it to charity; we find that Rep. John A. Boehner (R-OH) (remember, it's not pronounced BONER) has rented an apartment from a lobbyist whose clients have business with Boehner's Education and the Workforce Committee.

Wow... Another "G"reed "O"ver "P"eople party coincidence!

Remember that Boehner has stated that he sees nothing wrong with taking trips to exotic places like St. Andrews (the golf Club) in Scotland or other fabulous and enchanted places in the world on influential GOP Lobbyists' collective nickels.

Is this the man who will clean up congress? I don't think so.

And in another "strange-but-true" GOP dealing, disgraced and indicted former House Majority leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) was named to the House Appropriations Committee. The fox has left the henhouse for another henhouse. The Appropriations Committee spends the House's money as the House sees fit. It is ripe for those who want to make a quick buck, or several thousands of bucks, by simply offering up their influence. Duke Cunningham (former Representative from California who will now spend awhile in prison) has already pleaded guilty to reaching into the Appropriations Committee's cookie jar. DeLay is taking his place.

Have these guys no shame?

In response to "Cartoons", Rhian writes:

When I was looking for the infamous cartoon on Google, I only found three of them, and they seemed pretty innocuous. What I also found, (surprised me), was about a dozen for every one of them, of really nasty depictions of Israelis, scripted in Arab of course, so I couldn't tell what they said, but obviously truly insulting drawings.

There were several that were insulting to American images also, including Uncle Sam. So, it's okay for Islam to publish insulting cartoons in the name of humor but not for anyone else?

Arab Muslims have to be the most deluded people on the earth. If they are people. I don't know, out here in the wild wild west if it smells like an animal and acts like an animal, it probably is an animal; but Muslims, enemy of the free west, because they reject freedom, enemy of Israel out of necessity, because they want to annihilate Israel, enemy of black Africa, because they believe their blood is pure, they are betrayed as well by their own law/religion and leaders, who sell them out to superpowers as grist for the grind between them.

If they were people, they might have the foresight to realize that sooner rather than later, the world is going to move on from demand of oil. They might see their children literally starve on their deserts, tomorrow, when there is no more market for oil, in the face of the enmity toward all others, they create today.

In 1970, there were no cell phones, no computers, and no satellite TV for the masses. That was 35 years ago. Oil barons drone on about how technology will never evolve to remove demand for oil, but, it is true, that it is right 'round a very fast corner. Our own Air Force has planes that do not require oil based fuel. It won't take long to get that currently highly classified technology, to mainstream markets. ((Thanks to industrial espionage.)) The middle east will return to the dust from which it came, oil an obsolete substance in the catagory of pollution, and where then, will there be food for those people who are interested in nothing but violence?

Could somebody translate this page to Arabic or Farsii (sp?) and send it to Al-Jazeera? Religion is how you worship, not how you try to take over the world. Negotiation is what you learn to do well, when you live on land that does not feed your people and you have absolutely no money any more, from the oozy black stuff under your ground.

The following was sent to me by a friend. I thought you would be able to give this a better distribution than I could. As a Jew, this gives me the chills!

Another response to "Cartoons"

The recent world-wide furor about the depiction of Mohammed in cartoons has raised some serious questions in my mind.

a- he cartoons first appeared in Denmark in September, without much fuss. Why are the flames being fanned now, four months later, by whom, and with what agenda?

b- It has taken me hours of searching to find the actual cartoons on the internet, and when I finally did, I find an “Arab looking” figure, but not one labeled Mohammed. So who is making this interpretation and why? And why are they so hard to find on the internet – is self-censorship in play? And you might ask, whether most of the folks passionately debating the issue, and taking to the streets to burn embassies and shout ‘Murder the Infidels’, have actually seen the cartoons – which I doubt?

c- In the USA, the land where the freedom of the press is enshrined in the Constitution, why has no US newspaper published the cartoons or even debated the issues of freedom of the press vs. race hatred by publication of this “hate-filled material”?

d- Lastly, in almost every democratic society there are laws against incitement to racial hatred. That being the case, and knowing that the Islamic community is mightily aggrieved, why has no Islamic group filed a law suite against the newspaper publishers?

Just a few questions that I have been pondering this week.

Putting things much more succinctly is a just published column by Barry Shaw in his “View from Here” column – see below, under my signature; which also includes parts of some of the offending cartoons.

-Michael H. Anisfeld, from a -forward by Harriet Warner

"Are we witnessing a double standard here? Do innocuous cartoons against their prophet cause blood to be shed, yet gross cartoons against Jews and Christians are considered acceptable propaganda?"

" The cartoon depicted the Israeli Prime Minister devouring a baby. Reminiscent of the old anti-Semitic blood libel, this cartoon won an award in 2003 by the Political Cartoon Society. The Muslim demonstration was not in protests against the cartoon. On the contrary, they were using the offensive cartoon as part of a political protest."

" One of the best selling books in the Arab world is 'The Protocols of the Elders of Zion'. This anti-Semitic slur has been used in the past, particularly by the Nazis, as a tool to reason the destruction of the Jews. Many Muslim imams preach and incite against Jews and Christians in their mosques. Calling Jews pigs and monkeys is a regular phenomenon amongst Muslims."

"Non Muslim religious shrines have become regular targets for defacement, defiling, or destruction. Buddhist temples, The Church of the Nativity, Joseph's Tomb, Rachel's Tomb, are only some of the recent holy places vandalized and destroyed by Muslims offended by their presence."

"Islam is not a sensitive religion. It is a fanatical, intolerant, faith that will allow no criticism. It will, however, allow itself the freedom to protest, hurt, insult, incite, maim, behead, and blow up, anyone who speaks up against them. They are entitled to offend and kill Jews and Christians in the name of their faith by divine right."

"It is time for Muslims to take a hard look at themselves in the mirror."

"To suggest that Muslims look introspectively to improve is not their culture . It has not been that way for centuries and there is no reason to believe they can or will change. They seize upon any issue if there is advantage to take advantage out of hatred against their own or so called infidels . Knowing this , the only way to deal with them is to maintain strength , superiority , free of dependence."
