"A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves."

-Edward R. Murrow as forwarded by David W.

"I Plead Guilty Your Honor,"
-Jack Abramoff to a judge

I don't know whether to be happy, sad or just plain angry. The evil that Jack Abramoff has helped create will now allow him to barter a plea that could begin a crumbling of our nation's government. The fact that it has come this far, in itself, is mind-boggling. If ever there was a reason to begin the process of dismantling the lobby-system of government, it is now, because it has come to this: it's either "them" or "US". The "them" are the small group of profiteers, like the ones supported by groups such as the Enterprise Institute, the CATO Institute, The US Chamber of Commerce and the Federalist Society Vs. the "US" - the ever vanishing American Middle Class.

WE (as in "US") are the majority and time has come for US to fight against the tyranny brought forth by the "Them" leaders, the likes of Tom DeLay, Bill Frist and Abramoff, as well as their congressional "foot-soldiers" like Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) and Mike Ferguson (R-NJ).

I chooses ANGER!

I put it to all of you that you should vote for no candidate that doesn't support an amendment to the US Constitution which would prohibit lobbyists and corporate sponsorships of political candidates. Additionally, no one, other than US citizens should be allowed to contribute to any politician or political party or candidate at all. Period.

And now, back to Abramoff. I did a little search on opensecrets.org to find out to who, and how much Abramoff and his two partners, Michael Scanlon and Adam Kidan have given to various politicians and political organizations. The list certainly is a who's who of greed and corruption. Guess who is right at the top... Go on... Guess. I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count. Over the past few years, Delay through his political campaigns and his PAC, Americans for a Republican Majority has received $32,500 in contributions. In total. the trio have given mostly "G"reed "O"ver "P"eople party members of the federal government and their causes a grand total of $306,238. And that number doesn't even include those "fact finding tours" of St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland or the trips to the Northern Mariana Islands.

In total, over the past few years, the three crooks (all have pleaded guilty to various offenses) have contributed to about 150 GOP candidates and causes. Check out the chart below (compiled from www.opensecrets.org):

The three counts that Abramoff has pleaded guilty to are conspiracy, fraud, and tax evasion.

"Your honor, words will not be able to ever express how sorry I am for this, and I have profound regret and sorrow for the multitude of mistakes and harm I have caused. All of my remaining days, I will feel tremendous sadness and regret for my conduct and for what I have done. I only hope that I can merit forgiveness from the Almighty and from those I have wronged or caused to suffer. I will work hard to earn that redemption."
-Abramoff to the judge

Feel sorry in prison, you bastard. Maybe they'll let you share a cell with one of your old partners. Maybe they'll build a prison to house all of your cronies and buddies. It could be the who's who of prisons. There could be you Scanlon and Kidan, Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA, $5,500) Bob Ney (R-OH, $6,350), and a host of others (see the chart above).

"At the time I dealt with Jack Abramoff, I obviously did not know, and had no way of knowing, the self-serving and fraudulent nature of Abramoff's activities,"
-Ney

I hope the good people of Ohio are paying attention and are getting angry.

Gifts were supplied to members of congress "with the intent and often with the understanding that his clients would receive the official action they wanted. His actions often produced the official influence that he sought."
-Alice Fisher, assistant attorney general

"Eighteen months ago, Mr. Abramoff first made contact with prosecutors to admit his wrongdoing and to seek forgiveness from those he has wronged. He intends to continue to work with the Justice Department and others to fully resolve all matters of interest, to provide restitution to anyone he has harmed, and to seek absolution from all."
-Abbe Lowell, Abramoff's attorney

"Well, isn't that special,"
-The Church Lady (Dana Carvey) from Saturday Night Live Fame

What's worse than a bully? A Bully with money. It has been the story of our nation time and time again. Politicians forget that they work for all of the American People, not just the privileged few. It takes a scandal that hurts many of those same people to get things changed. This is the time. This is the place. This is the reason to take our country back. Get rid of the Abramoffs and the DeLays and let's get ou country going again.

We need JOBS and HEALTH CARE and FAIR EDUCATION FOR ALL CHILDREN. We need FREE COLLEGE and AN OBJECTIVE MAIN-STREAM MEDIA. More than that, we good people in office.

It shouldn't have to be noted that someone running our country is "fair and honest". Those are two traits that should go without saying. They aren't. It's time to get the best people into office, not the most easily influenced.

It starts with banning all lobbyists and lobbying. It starts with a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT the the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION.

An it needs to start NOW!

Media Madman
Q: What's the Difference Between the Main Stream media and the Right Wing Media?

A: Nothing

Occasionally, I flip over to the main stream media to get a feel for what the right wingers are saying. I refuse to watch Fox News because it's not only right wing but downright idiotic so I flip over to MSNBC (Fox News with less idiocy). One of the more intelligent commentators is Joe Scarborough. I disagree with him thoroughly but at least he is intelligible unlike O'Reilly and Hannity.

However, last night's Scarborough Country was downright despicable. There was a two against one debate on NSA spying. Buchanan plus another Republican thug were shouting down a law professor who was expressing reasonable concern about the government prosecuting whistle blowers. To say the least, it was absolutely unfair as the professor could barely get a word in.

Scarborough cut away to a shot with Tucker Carlson as they joked about John Kerry running for President in 2008, Howard Dean as the head of the DNC and "clueless" Democrats in general. I decided I had enough and would write MSNBC a letter.

The right wing is diverting attention by attempting to punish whoever leaked the NSA domestic spying to the press. The New York Times sat on the story for a year but now that it became public the Bush administration is going nuts ... you mean they didn't know about the leak a year ago, I find that hard to believe. The main point is that Bush should have used the FISA court and no amount of diversion will change that fact.

A Health Care Scenario

A patient needs has tinnitus ( ringing in the ears). The general practitioner knows two ear experts - a "reasonably" priced expert that is 45 minutes away and a "astronomically" priced expert that is 15 minutes away. The patient decides for convenience sake to see the expert that is closer. Supposedly, this patient does not care about the cost as Medicare is paying the bill.

For the person describing this scenario, this is prove that consumer directed health care would save money as the person would be required to pay from their own private account. I have the following observations:

1) I wasn't aware that the consumer directed health care advocates want to privatize Medicare. I suppose they also want to do that with Medicaid as well. They should come clean!

2) The person on Medicare is elderly by definition, driving 45 minutes anywhere may be out of the question. They may save no money at all going to a doctor that is 45 minutes away if they need to take a car service.

3) Why is one doctor charging "astronomical" rates? Sorry Doctors, as I see it, you have a big role in health care inflation as you charge the fees.

4) Medicare is dysfunctional if it agrees to pay the "astronomical" fee.

Medicare has a list of customary fees and should never agree to pay more than what is on the fee schedule. That means this patient would have to pay out of the pocket for what goes beyond the customary fee.

I have not found for consumer directed health care to be compelling. A single payer or single negotiator (similar to what Kerry proposed in 2004) system is the best solution. Consumer directed health care is merely the last straw that breaks the back of health care coverage.

In response to "These guys don't only oppose a 'living wage', they oppose all wages, except their own. Imagine a time some 150 years or so ago. You could just see them now 'lobbying' for the expansion of slavery into the north. One has to believe that if GW was president back then, they might have been able to do it, too," Robert Scardapane writes:

Actually, the economic system they are lobbying for is called feudalism. I know that brings about images of Knights and King Arthur's Court but the feudal system is where no wealth is re-distributed. People must live as slaves or indentured servants to the "feudal lords". The real truth is that all economic systems re-distribute wealth one way or the other. When re-distribution of wealth stops, you have feudalism.

By the way, according to "trickle down economics", tax cuts supposedly bring in more revenue. So, if income tax is cut to zero, do you get infinite revenue? Ridiculous right! Of course, there would still be forms of consumption tax - sales tax for instance - if income tax was abolished. But then, would the anti-tax types argue that consumption tax should be cut to zero? Probably! In that case, you have no money coming into the government. Well, I suppose you could levy a tax on the "feudal lords".

They would be the only people with money. Republicanism is simply reactionary. They try to disguise it as something new but we seen it all before in countless unjust societies that inevitably collapse. What goes around keeps coming around.

In response to "The philosophy is to keep wages low; make the poor poorer; and render the middle class, the largest group of Americans, inconsequential," Robert Scardapane also writes:

The Republicans have advocated this philosophy since the Gilded Age - that wonderful time of Robber Barons, tenement livings in the large cities and economic collapse. They called it "classical economics" back then. They justified it strangely enough with Darwinian evolution - yeah kids, the Republicans love evolution when it can be used to advance their goals. They argued that the fittest will survive and that poverty was a moral crime.

Sounds nuts right?

But, nothing has changed except the rhetoric. Now, they argue for "trickle down" economics. You know, all good things emanate down from extreme wealth at the top. If the bottom is getting poorer, it must mean that the top needs even more. This sounds much nicer than Darwinian economics and they can appease their religious right wingers by criticizing Darwinism. The net effect is the same - the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.
