"Outsourcing is just a new way of doing international trade..." "...which makes it a good thing."

- Dr. N. Gregory Mankiw

Dr. N. Gregory Mankiw is President George W. Bush’s chairman of the council of economic advisors. The following is his fictitious interview for a job running a small company in the town of Anywhere, USA. **

Interviewer:       Please Mr. Mankiw, have a seat.

Dr. Mankiw:       Thank you… and that’s DR. MANKIW, if you please.

Interviewer:        I am sorry. Dr. Mankiw. Why don’t we begin? Tell me about yourself and your experience in the business world

Dr. Mankiw:       I studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. As a teacher, I taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economies. My research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. I have published articles that have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, such as The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune.

Interviewer:        Please, go on.

Dr. Mankiw:       Additionally, I have written two popular textbooks - the intermediate-level textbook "Macroeconomics" from Worth Publishers and the introductory textbook "Principles of Economics" from South- Western/Thomson. Together, these two books have sold about a million copies and have been translated into seventeen languages. In addition to teaching, research, and writing, I am a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics.

Interviewer:        All very impressive, I must say. What real business experience do you have. What businesses have you run?

Dr. Mankiw:       None actually.

Interviewer:        What was your last position that didn’t have to do with being an economic intellectual?

Dr. Mankiw:      I spent one summer long ago as a sailing instructor on Long Beach Island.

Interviewer:        Dr. Mankiw, when was the last time you had to meet a payroll?

Dr. Mankiw:        Never.

Interviewer:         Dr. Mankiw, when was the last time you had to make an HR decision?

Dr. Mankiw:         Never.

Interviewer:          Dr. Mankiw, when was the last time you had to pay business payroll taxes?

Dr. Mankiw:          Never.

Interviewer:           Dr. Mankiw, when was the last time you had to negotiate a health insurance plan for all of your employees?

Dr. Mankiw:           Never.

Interviewer:            Dr. Mankiw, what makes you think you are qualified to run my business?

Dr. Mankiw:            (Silence)

Interviewer:            Thank you Dr. Mankiw. We’ll be in touch. (Dr. Mankiw leaves).

Interviewer:            (Speaking to the receptionist through an intercom). Please send in the next applicant and he better have some REAL experience.
