"G"LOBAL "W"ARMING is Still a REAL
Issue
President GW Bush’s own scientists have
found that global warming is likely
to make hurricanes more intense unless something is done to reduce the growth of
greenhouse gases, contrary to what Fox News
Weathermen say. Those are the gases produced by human caused emissions, like the
exhaust from our SUV’s. Recent studies completed at the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) state that the warming of the ocean is likely
to significantly increase the wind speed and strength of hurricanes. Other
studies show that global warming is likely to melt the icecaps, increasing
average sea levels. The combination of stronger hurricanes and rising sea levels
could render much of our coastline uninhabitable.
While President GW Bush stands on piles of
rubble that used to be someone’s home for a photo op: While President
GW Bush passes out bottles of water to show his
“humanity” and “concern” for the people of Florida
and Alabama who have lost and suffered so
much from these hurricanes; While President GW Bush
kisses the head of Karen Heinold in Pensacola, Florida
so an AP photographer could take a picture we ask ourselves one question: Is
there anything that the United States
government can do to help prevent the frequency and increasing power of
hurricanes?
Sure, nuking the storms as they develop sounds like a real
GW Bush idea. Lots of noise and power. Sounds
like what Tim Allen might have done on the old TV series “Home Improvement” if
he had be selected president. But there is a better idea. President
GW Bush should seek to reduce human caused
emissions, just as he promised. President GW Bush
should force manufacturers to make more energy efficient air conditioners and
refrigerators, just as he promised. President GW Bush
should be supporting the research and development of new energy technologies,
such as hydro-electric technologies, just as he promised.
"My administration is committed to a leadership
role on the issue of climate change... We do not know how much our climate
could, or will change in the future. We do not know how fast change will occur,
or even how some of our actions could impact it."
-President Bush, on June 11, 2001
Some Commitment, huh.
"the incomplete state of scientific knowledge of
the causes, and solutions to, global climate change."
-President Bush citing why he is opposed to
Kyoto Protocol,
which calls for a cut in Carbon Dioxide emissions to 1990 standards by 2012
"unrealistic"
-Bush on the
Kyoto Protocol
"not based on science"
-Bush, again on the Kyoto Protocol,
again
the climb in global temperatures was due to
"human caused emissions."
-The
IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change),
an international panel set up by the U.N. comprised of thousands of scientists,
and the World Meteorological Organization
President GW Bush called for
"more studies" including a study from the
National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
"Greenhouse gases are accumulating in the Earth's atmosphere, as a result of human activity, causing surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise. Temperatures are, in fact, rising. The changes observed over the last several decades are likely mostly due to human activities but we cannot rule out some significant part of these changes are also a reflection of natural variability."
-The NAS Study Ordered by
GW Bush
This last fragment of a sentence is what Bush and
his corporate polluters are hanging their hats on.
The Bush administration
ignored the IPCC
and NAS findings by saying the
NAS report
"concludes that the Earth is warming. But it in inconclusive on why - whether
its man-made causes or whether its natural causes."
Either the president misread the report or just
plain lied! (I'm betting on the latter.)
"The committee generally agrees with the
assessment of human caused climate change presented in the IPCC report."
-This NAS report ordered by
GW Bush
This means "G"lobal "W"arming is BAD.
"Our immediate goal is to reduce America's gas
emissions relative to the size of our economy."
-GW Bush
Does the environment really care how much money coal mines, chemical
manufacturers and other polluters are making? If those companies make oodles and
oodles of money are we then able to put more pollutants into the air we breathe
and the water we drink?
How much money will clean air cost,
President Bush? Who will own the clean air? How will it be purchased? You can
bet your bottom dollar that if there were a will the way would be found by these
guys.
President GW Bush's proposals to industry
are "voluntary" not "mandatory”. There
are no requirements put on the polluters to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"I read the report put out by the bureaucracy."
-GW Bush referring to a U.S. climate
report was sent to the United Nations, as required
by an agreement signed by President George H.W. Bush, in June 2002.
Question: Ari, I just would like to set the record
straight on something the president said last week, when he was up at the NSA,
when he was asked about the report on global warming by the EPA. He said he read
the report. I believe the report is 260-some pages—he meant he read the full
report?
Fleischer: I think the president—whenever presidents
say they read it, you can read that to be he was briefed.
-June 10, 2002
You could bet your bottom dollar that President Bill
Clinton read that report from page one to page 260. President
Bush lied about reading the report for the
simple reason that he didn't want to appear to be dumb. It was a little white
lie that didn't have to be told. It would have been just fine had
GW Bush said he had been briefed on the
report, but it's hard to stop lying "cold-turkey."
Come to think of it, its hard to do anything "cold-turkey", right
Mr. Bush?
It reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live skits (in the late seventies,
when they were funny) with Martin Short playing corporate CEO, Nathan Thurm
caught in a lie by 60 minutes Mike Wallace, played by Harry Shearer:
Mike Wallace: Pardon me for saying this, but you
seem defensive.
Nathan Thurm: I'm not being defensive! You're the
one who's being defensive! Why is always the other person who's being defensive?
Have you ever asked yourself that? Why don't you ask yourself that?
Mike Wallace: [ holds out paper ] This is an
affidavit..
Nathan Thurm: I know that!
Mike Wallace: Well, let me finish. This is an
affidavit from a woman who has severe nerve damage, on her upper thigh, from
sitting on one of your defective whoopee cushions. Here, read it.
Nathan Thurm: You read it!
Mike Wallace: Well, I have read it.
Nathan Thurm: So, why do I have to read it?
Mike Wallace: Well, it does pertain to your
company.
Nathan Thurm: I know that! Why wouldn't I know
that? It's my company, I'm quite aware of that! [ looks at the camera ] Is it
me? It's him, right?
"There will be no genuine security if the planet
is ravaged."
-British Prime Minister Tony Blair
to President GW Bush
President GW Bush, it is time to take that
“leadership role on the issue of climate change”
as you have promised. The United States
can’t afford to be a pedestrian on this matter. The
“GW” in your name shouldn’t stand for “Global Warming”.
